Research interests:

Over the past ten years Dr. Kozey's
primary research has been aimed at improving
understanding of muscle synergies and co-activation by exploring the amplitude and shape
characteristics of skeletal muscle responses using electromyography (EMG) and linking those to kinematic and kinetic changes. The application of this work has been on understanding the alterations associated with musculoskeletal pathologies in two regions of the body i) the lower back and ii) the knee. The goal is to develop a pathomechanical framework that will help in the design and evaluation of interventions aimed at preventing musculoskeletal pathology or slowing disease progression. Overall this should help maintain mobility and physical activity and the health benefits associated with an active lifestyle.
Dr. Kozey and her research team have studied asymptomatic individuals, young and older populations, explored differences between men and women, examined chronic and now subacute low back pain and different severities of knee osteoathrtis.

Collectively her work has provided the foundation for data-driven questions on better
understanding mechanisms and thus interventions aimed at impairments in the
neuromuscular control that ultimately have a negative impact on the mechanical
environment of the joint (i.e. excessive joint motion, muscle imbalances and joint loading).

Dr. Kozey’s research and teaching experience extends over 20 years. She makes special efforts to be accessible to students, and has seen several graduate students successfully present and publish their research findings.
