Dr. Sandy Rennie

Biography: Dr. Rennie graduated as a physiotherapist in 1972 with a diploma. He completed his BPT in 1976, his MSc in Physical Education and Sport Sciences in 1985, and his PhD in Education Administration and Leadership in 2002 at the University of Alberta. He has extensive teaching experience in physiotherapy, teaching in Australia from 1977-1981, at the University of Alberta from 1981-2004, and at the University of Toronto from 2004-2006. He joined the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie in January 2007 as Director.

He has lectured at many local, national and international conferences and given numerous continuing education courses on the use of electrophysical agents and the use of massage in physiotherapy. Dr. Rennie was recognized by his peers and students by winning two teaching awards at the University of Alberta in 1998 and 2002, and he received a student-nominated Achievement Award from the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto in 2006.

Research interests: His research interests are the use and efficacy of electrophysical agents, and physiotherapy education. He has examined the effects of ultrasound and laser on tissue healing and inflammation. He has also examined the learning styles of physiotherapy students and practicing physiotherapists.

Volunteer activities: Dr. Rennie has volunteered for both the College of Physical Therapists of Alberta and the Canadian Physiotherapy Association for many years. He has been on many committees, chaired the Sports Division of CPA, and served two terms on the Board of Directors of CPA. He was CPA President from 2003-2004. He was also a sports physiotherapist, and has traveled to many high profile events, including Commonwealth, Pan American, and Olympic Summer Games. Most recently, Dr. Rennie was recognized by his peers with Honorary Life Membership in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association for outstanding service for over twenty-five years at local and national levels.
