Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder. The introduction of L-dopa therapy in the late 1960s has extended the life expectancy of people with this disease. However, L-dopa therapy is associated with diminishing effectiveness over time. It also has troublesome side effects. As the condition progresses, secondary side effects such as poor posture and reduced flexibility, muscle strength and endurance complicate function.
The Maritime Parkinson Clinic was established by Dr. George Turnbull to find ways to minimize some of these side effects, and increase overall mobility and function in Parkinson’s clients. Located in the Forrest Building at Dalhousie, the clinic is funded by the Parkinson Society of Canada under its Community Outreach Program.
The clinic focuses on physiotherapy intervention. Following an assessment that includes gait and balance, and discussion with each client, an individualized exercise plan is developed. This exercise is based on each person’s interests and hobbies. It may include exercises to music or advice on current activities.
The clinic’s goals are to:
- Assess and monitor functional performance.
- Communicate clinic findings to client’s neurologist / family physician.
- Educate those with Parkinson’s, their families, caregivers, support groups and other health care professionals regarding Parkinson’s and new developments in its management.
- Prescribe, based on individual needs, home exercise programs and lifestyle adjustments to minimize the physical manifestations of Parkinson’s.
- Refer to other health care professionals for specific problems.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of physical interventioins designed to improve function.
Many patients with Parkinson’s live sedentary lives, which may cause complications and further health risks. The clinic provides ongoing follow up to monitor progress and provide advice regarding exercise programs.
